Free Spirits Music is a mobile rock music school providing songwriting and performance programs across New York City. Equipped with a full staff of touring rock musicians, FSM is a hands-on experience that builds teamwork, confidence, and critical thinking skills by forming bands and learning how to write original songs in a safe environment.
The core mission behind Free Spirits Music is a single fact: by understanding your own creative process, you hold the power to inspire, change, and unite the world through music. Free Spirits Music’s methodology is proven to provide students with a critical musical foundation alongside peers and mentors. The shared experience of creation builds an emotional bond that cuts through cultural differences and socio-economic barriers, sparking a deep confidence in one’s own abilities and emotional power.
Free Spirits Music offers 1-hour workshops, full-day workshops, and after-school programs for students ages 4-17. Students learn to play guitar and develop vocal technique, write original songs, learn music theory, form bands, record demos, and/or perform a rock concert of original music. Whether or not students consider themselves “musical”, the one-hour workshops will end with a polished, original song based on a musical skill. In longer workshops, students’ understanding of rhythm, pitch, harmony, and arranging will deepen. In after-school programs, students have the option to play guitar or piano, culminating with a final performance at a rock music venue. A more in-depth analysis of songwriting, audio engineering, and stage performance will be addressed. Weekly themes include: “Avoiding Unnatural Rhythms In Rhymes,” “The Juggling Songwriter,” and “Memorable Melodies and Catchy Hooks.”
