Education Through Music promotes the use of music and other arts in schools in the inner-city and in disadvantaged areas, as a means of enhancing students’ academic performance and general development.
Partner School Program
ETM forms long-term partnerships with elementary and middle schools that lack sufficient resources for school-wide music education. It works closely with each principal to design an individualized program for each school, addressing the school’s needs, and incorporating the following activities: weekly, year-long music instruction for every child, following a skills-based, comprehensive and sequential curriculum that meets National and New York State standards; instrumental ensembles and other enrichment to supplement music instruction; training and professional development for music and
academic teachers; management guidance for principals; and outreach to parents and the community. ETM involves the whole school community in the programs, and supports principals in their efforts to provide a well-rounded education to all students.
Music Teacher Professional Development
Beyond its partner school network, ETM also offers a wide range of professional development for music teachers on a fee per service basis. It provides one-on-one coaching and mentoring for music teachers, consisting of classroom observation, evaluation, and follow-up discussions. It also offers music faculty workshops, to enhance teaching skills and address such topics as music methodologies, use of technology, and strategies to collaborate with academic teachers to coordinate instruction in music and academics and support learning in other areas. Coaching and workshops can be tailored based on the needs of the school and music teacher(s).
