CAT offers interactive, drama-based in-class workshops for students from grades PreK to 12. They focus on age appropriate topics of interest to young people and are tailored to the individual class. CAT also sponsors the NYC Student Shakespeare Festival and the free, after-school CAT Youth Theatre, as well as an extensive professional development program for educators.
The Creative Arts Team (CAT) at The City University of New York uses the power of drama to inspire youth to learn more. Over the past three years, CAT has worked in nearly 1,000 classrooms and communities in the five boroughs of New York City. Our students reflect the city’s economic, ethnic, and cultural diversity. Over our 35-plus years of existence, we have worked with more than a million youth.
Character, collaboration, story, and the dynamic relationship between actor and audience – the key components of drama – form the basis of CAT’s unique approach. In schools and communities throughout New York City, CAT’s professional Actor-Teachers combine and recombine these elements to create one-of-a-kind interactive learning experiences for young people and adult populations. Decades of assessments validate our pioneering approach and methodology.
