Visual literacy, or the ability to construct meaning from visual images, has become a vital skill, central
to the successful navigation of modern life. Aperture’s program provides the visual literacy training and
tools that young people need to navigate the ocean of images from television, advertising, and across all
media platforms. Designed to cultivate visual literacy though photography and photobook creation, all of
Aperture’s youth programs support the development of observational, reasoning, language arts, and imagecreation
competencies. These programs foster an appreciation for the photographic medium as a vehicle for
self-expression and an understanding of photography’s role in documenting history and culture. Aperture
offers both in-class and after-school twenty week curricula for 5th-9th grade taught by professional teaching
artists tailored to the needs of our educational partners and their students.
Publishing: four issues each year of Aperture magazine; twenty new photobooks and books
about photography annually; a growing digital publishing program, including e-books, apps,
a daily blog, and online features; two issues of The PhotoBook Review ; and approximately
twenty-five print and other limited editions each year; Aperture’s public programs: exhibitions at
our gallery in New York and at partner venues, which tour to museums and other photography
centers nationally and internationally; an annual international Portfolio Prize and members
exhibition; workshops, signings, and education events each week at our New York gallery and in
collaboration with museums, universities and community organizations.
Founded 1952 by a group of artist, writers and curators as a “common ground for Photography”
Aperture today is a multiplatform publisher and center that unites the photography community in
print, on-line and in person.
