This vine-covered Victorian cottage surrounded by gardens on the  shore of New York Bay was home for almost 80 years to pioneer woman photographer Alice Austen (1866-1952).  In addition to furnishings and decorative arts from the period, the house/museum, built in 1690 and known as Clear Comfort, features exhibitions of Austen’s photographs often alongside the work of her contemporaries.

One program, Alice’s Eyes, allows students to move though Clear Comfort and compare what they see with what Austen captured with her lens.  Another offering, Alice’s House, focuses on the house’s history and architectural evolution from a one-room Dutch farmhouse to the rambling Victorian Gothic cottage seen today; an art book helps students to visualize this transformation. Lastly, Alice’s World goes into greater detail about the Austen family and its history, much of which is told by way of the photographer’s work.

Admission: $3 per student
Season: March-December
