Founded in 1949, the After Dinner Opera Company is known for its performances of American chamber works for general audiences. Recent performances have included several works by Seymour Barab—including “Passion in the Principal’s Office” and “The Ruined Maid”—at Symphony Space on the Upper West Side, and Offenbach’s “Tales of Hoffman,” at La Belle Epoque in Lower Manhattan.

The company, in association with Third Street Music School Settlement, offers 25-week music and dance workshops in the schools. Students are rehearsed in the complexities of the score and libretto and are directed in the making of their own sets and costumes, though these are sometimes provided. After Dinner Opera Company joins the program only during the last five or six weeks to build upon the foundation laid by classroom and music teachers.  During this final phase of the workshop the company’s professional vocalists and musicians work closely with students to bring their efforts to fruition in the form of full-scale amateur production such as “The Pied Piper of Hamelin.”
